How to use a tampon??

I have JUST started my period. My teach in human growth said it is best to try both pads and tampons,because everyone's body is different and one mite feel more comfortable than the other. I need help on how to use a tampon, and will it hurt? And my mom has never used a tampon..so...she has NO idea......plz help!
