What house facing allows maximum afternoon sun in the summer?

Thinking of buying a house with a pool in the backyard and want afternoon sun in the summer - should the house face east or south? In the northern hemisphere of course and more specifically the s.f. bay area. Maybe it depends how big the house behind is also but ume it's not right on top up against the fence.
