I have found small specks of metal in my engine oil help?

I know its bad but I have no other way of transportation. It almost looks like glitter is sprinkled in the oil. The motor is a 3.0Lt Plymouth V6 that was built 1992. The last time I had a mechanic work on it was in 2005 and he recommended I get a new engine soon but I never have. I haven't had any other problems except for constant oil leakage and transmission problems. Any suggestions?
